I have hanging on the wall of our living room a picture painted by Del Parson, titled, \u201cThe Old Man Wept.\u201d It represents some of the founding fathers of the United States of America as they signed the Constitution.<\/p>\n

The signing of the Constitution goes hand in hand with July 4th<\/sup> Independence Day celebrations when we commemorate the birth of the United States of America as an independent nation.<\/p>\n

In the moment captured in the painting, Benjamin Franklin is signing his name to the document with tears in his eye. He was 81 years of age and was finally witnessing the fulfillment of many years of service and sacrifice to create a free nation.<\/strong><\/p>\n

He had given a speech at the signing and referred to the half-sun painted on the back of George Washington\u2019s chair. He said, \u201cI have often\u2026 looked at the sun behind the president without being able to tell whether it was rising or setting. Now at length I have the happiness to know that it is indeed a rising and not a setting sun.\u201d<\/p>\n

It is recorded that when Franklin signed, \u201cthe old man wept.\u201d<\/h3>\n

This painting is a reminder to me of those who had the vision, character and faith<\/strong> to see what this nation could become. I am reminded that I am the recipient of their sacrifices<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

I never want to forget and so this painting hangs in the front room of our home.<\/p>\n

This is the week we celebrate Independence Day in the United States. No matter where you live, whether in this country or another, I hope you will take a moment this week to remember and appreciate those who have paved the way to make the freedoms you enjoy possible.<\/strong><\/p>\n
