{"id":2163,"date":"2020-04-27T06:30:19","date_gmt":"2020-04-27T12:30:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.melaniebnewman.com\/staging\/9944\/?p=2163"},"modified":"2020-04-25T11:34:11","modified_gmt":"2020-04-25T17:34:11","slug":"when-others-think-differently","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.melaniebnewman.com\/staging\/9944\/when-others-think-differently\/","title":{"rendered":"When Others Think Differently"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>We like to think that everyone sees the world the same way we do. <\/b><\/span><span class=\"s1\">And when they don\u2019t, we feel a little defensive.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p3\"><em><span class=\"s1\"><b>Impatience<\/b><\/span><\/em><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">We recognize this tendency when we become impatient with others.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Questioning what they say or do? Thinking they are wrong? Perhaps even doubting their intelligence?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">I\u2019ve realized lately, that within my own family, even with so many shared experiences, we still see the world differently.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p3\"><em><span class=\"s1\"><b>Personal Filters<\/b><\/span><\/em><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>We each have our own filters through which we see the world.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">That filter is<b> made up of personal experiences, personality, thoughts, choices and life events.<\/b> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">All of which are unique to the individual.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>I was recently reminded of the differing perspectives in my home.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">My high-school daughter accuses me of forgetting she is still in school. Though I deny it, the truth is, she\u2019s right. I do forget.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">She\u2019s at home because of the pandemic, and I want to do something together, such as go bike riding, watch a movie, or complete a deep cleaning project, and she has to remind me that she is still in school.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Part of her filter right now is of a high school senior doing her best to navigate this unprecedented time of finishing her high-school on line.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">She has her personal experiences, hopes, dreams, beliefs, creating her filter through which she sees the world<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">I have my filter of a different stage, seeing life through my experiences, thoughts, and beliefs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">And <b>I have a tendency to think others think the same way. <\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\"><i>It is easy to become impatient or misunderstand others when we are merely experiencing life through different filters.<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p1\"><em><span class=\"s1\"><b>What to do?<\/b><\/span><\/em><\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">What can we do during times of impatience?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\"><i>One of the kindest things we can do is to remember that others view life through their own filters.<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">You don\u2019t need to know or judge the experiences that formed their filters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">You just need to <b>remember and look at it as an opportunity to be more understanding, accepting, and forgiving.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Times of impatience then become exercises in growth as we learn to recognize and appreciate that we see through different filters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">With love,<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.melaniebnewman.com\/staging\/9944\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/signature.png\" alt=\"Melanie Newman\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We like to think that everyone sees the world the same way we do.
