{"id":2189,"date":"2020-06-08T06:30:40","date_gmt":"2020-06-08T12:30:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.melaniebnewman.com\/staging\/9944\/?p=2189"},"modified":"2022-04-18T14:28:16","modified_gmt":"2022-04-18T20:28:16","slug":"differences-among-friends","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.melaniebnewman.com\/staging\/9944\/differences-among-friends\/","title":{"rendered":"Differences Among Friends"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Differences among friends need not be a problem.<\/b> I recently discovered the <b>differences<\/b> I observed between my daughter and her friends <b>to be empowering.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Let me explain.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Rather than wanting some other gift for her high school graduation, my daughter wanted time with her friends, so they planned a trip together. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">We live in Idaho, and sharing the warmer weather and fun activities of Southern Utah was attractive to them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">I had the opportunity to travel with and observe these four friends, all capable, mature, young women.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The thing I noticed is that they had a deeper understanding of what friendship involves than I had at their age.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">They understood that differences among friends is not a problem.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>I observed how different they each were and yet how they enjoyed one another\u2019s company.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Two liked hiking. Two did not. One expected to buy groceries and cook; one expected to eat out. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">I saw how <b>they respected each other\u2019s interests and view points.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>They took turns<\/b> <b>choosing<\/b> <b>activities <\/b>or movies to watch.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>They asked what each other wanted <\/b>and to what degree they preferred a choice.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>They talked through and created solutions<\/b> to any differences. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>They cared that each had a say.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">I saw them <b>encourage each other <\/b>in areas that were strengths to one, but unfamiliar to another.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">I noticed my daughter helping one non-swimmer friend using the same technique I used with her as a child. (Floating on her back imagining a string pulling her torso up to the sky).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>These young women with all their differences in backgrounds, abilities, likes and dislikes understand and appreciate that differences can add to, strengthen and enhance their friendships as a whole, and themselves as individuals.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">I realized that they each made each other want to be a better person.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">How gratifying it was for me to see that my daughter and her friends are way beyond me at that age, knowing how to <b>navigate differences and support the good in each other. <\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Do I do the same for my friends?
